Parlement of Foules (1382) by Geoffrey Chaucer
ReplyDeleteThis poem was written to honor the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. A treaty providing for a marriage was signed on May 2, 1381, When they were married eight months later, they were each only 15 years old.
Also assumed (wrongly)to be the first mention of Feb 14th as V day by chaufer a poet.
ReplyDeleteChaucer's second period (up to c.1387) is called his Italian period because during this time his works were modeled primarily on Dante and Boccaccio. Major works of the second period include The Parliament of Fowls (shown here), which tells of the mating of fowls on St. Valentine's Day and is thought to celebrate the betrothal of Richard II to Anne of Bohemia
