Daily Trivia #565 The Last Frontier of Uncle Sam

X is a tropical atoll in the Indian Ocean, and a part of British territory. It is about 1800 km from India. In the 1970s, the United States established a military base here, leading to the displacement of a large number of people. This expulsion is the topic of the 2004 documentary Stealing A Nation, written and directed by John Pilger. The US has often been accused of running secret prisons in X. Recently, Wikileaks disclosed that the UK was planning to set up a marine reserve here, to prevent the natives from returning.

In common language, X is used to denote a small region of dominance of an entity within a large area. Amar Singh of Samajwadi Party famously remarked "Rae Bareilly and Amethi are the X of the Congress in UP."

ID X.

QFW 4 - Fashion Finale

This is the last post for QFW and it has been a great series of fashion quizzing. It made me realise there is quizzing in every category possible. Scoreboard looks all tied up at the moment. [If there are any scoring errors, please comment and tell us]. So, this post should serve as a cool tiebreaker with 100 points. No wonder than that some connects might seem a bit cryptic or on multiple levels too. We saw some new people giving answers on our questions and that's what this series was meant for. Great going. Now, to see who comes out on top, answer these:

1.  Connect. [30 points] Full description shall be most appreciated. :)

2.  This dress needs the model to strip down to bare naked and was made famous by the supermodel Giselle Bundchen. To create the dress, the company used simulation and rendering softwares like Maya. Name the dress. [10 points]

3.  Two fashion houses lost similar battles against these 2 companies [logos given]. Id the two fashion houses and the reason. [10 points]

4.  Connect to a brand. [30 points]

5. Connect to a celebrity. [20 points]

After the 4 posts of QBIT Fashion Week, as per the points tally, gold goes to abhishek, silver to vendetta and bronze to DJ! Woohoo! And as always, well done to whoever answered!
For this post particularly, the answers I was looking for were:
1. Adidas:
Adidas bought Reebok, who's original logo was the Union Jack along with the text Reebok. The characteristic 3-stripes logo of Adidas was bought from a little known Finnish company called Karhu (which means bear in Finnish) for I think 1600 dollars and 2 bottles of whiskey. Adidas has a close relationship with the band Run DMC and it also produces a Starship Trooper among other versions of Star Wars special merchandise.

2. Water Dress

3. Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana for the domain names lv.com and dg.com

4. Brook Brothers. Quoting Aprajita here, "The Brooks brother Luxottica owns this brand. Barack Obama wore their brand's clothes on the inauguration day. In the movie up in the air George Clooney wore suits of this brand. And for the oscars the brooks brothers clothed the young stars of the movie slumdog millionaire."

5. Jennifer Aniston:
She has been the brand embassador of Loreal Elvive and started off with a permanent character in the TV Show Molly. Her haircut in early seasons of Friends got famous as the Rachel Haircut (Here shown Geri Willis sporting the look). Her fragrance is called Lolavie and she dated John Mayer.

Continuing on our fashion posts, here is the 3rd post for the week. A mix of dry and connects worth 80 90 points. Great to see the leaderboard being populated! A lot of places got shuffled after the previous post. So, its never too late to start!
Go!

1. Connect the people and the logo. Apologies for the bad quality of the logo. [20 points for full connect. Part marks on Quizmaster's discretion]

2. X is popuarly used for hair styling and was first made in England. It was advertised by a very famous jingle on TV. Y was an extremely succesful radio announcer and voice over artist. Y's mother loved X's jingle so much, she made Y change his script and give rise to one of the most famous shouts, Z in television history. ID X, Y and Z. [ 7 points for each ID but 20 for all]

3. Connect [25 points]

4.  Another XYZ question. :) Princess X carried a bag and appeared in a famous magazine trying to hide her bump. The bag as then renamed as the X bag. The company, Z that made this bag, after 28 years, made named another famous bag Y after actress Y. Variants of Y reaches costs of $150,000 and uses reptile skin. Z apparently used Pakistani buffalo skin to make its handbags too. Z opened shop in India in 2008 at The Oberoi, Delhi. ID X, Y and Z. [5 points for each ID]

5. It became the national dress of a country, announced by the its founder. The richest man in the world during the 2nd World War always wore this dress. A modified version of this dress was named after a famous politician, popularized by a Hippie band and was famously worn by Steven Seagal. Which dress am I talking about? [10 points]

Answer - My first question ever which could not be cracked. Surprised !!!
Anyway, the images are: Alan Kay, an eminent Xerox PARC researcher and scientist who started the OLPC (logo depicted). He came up with the original idea of a laptop in 1968 which was not supported commercially by Xerox. Epson (tagline depicted) took up the idea and made the first ever portable computer. Quanta Computer(bottom left) is the largest OEM for Apple, Dell, Lenovo & all the major companies making laptops with a global market share of nearly 30%. The Alan Kay concept was called The Dyna, indicated by the Harley Davidson Dyna shown in the upper left image. The common theme, obviously is the Laptop Computer !!!

The US Navy was central to all these plans and went for aggressive recruitment of sailors & soldiers for the first time in modern Naval history.
In all these plans, the US referred to itself with the colour code "Blue"(pic 6).
Browse on it, its an interesting piece of historical trivia.
