daily trivia #394 "For the greater good"

Finally a textual question for the special occasion....

X was an Englishman whose mother has recently died & father sentenced to life and Y is of implied German nationality expelled from school. As both were quite brilliant and intelligent, the two planned to establish a new world order & also planned to work together for a supposedly mythical quest involving 3 objects. During this a very closed friendship between the two is established which was later revealed to be romantic(homosexual). After an unfortunate accident in a battle X realized his mistakes and followed the good path while Y went on the dark way and eventually possessed 1 of the objects of the quest. Later in 1945 X defeated Y in a fierce battle. Id X & Y.
